Hot Whale Shark Season starting


Whale Sharks started to come in mid of November and has been seen frequently around their favorite feeding grounds. We expect the hot whale shark season starting around December New Moon / 13th of Dec. Multiple whale shark sightings are possible this time of the year till end of January and longer.

Illegal Fishing Nets Removed from Coiba Dive Sites

Dive Operators Scuba Coiba from Santa Catalina and Dive Base Coiba from Pixvae organized the removal and disposal of big fishing nets and long lines covering parts of several dive sites of Coiba National Park. The project was funded by Rancho Estero cabins in Santa Catalina, voluntary work was  given by the professional divers Ben Harris, Christophe Mangano, Kevan Mantell and Herbie Sunk. Since MarViva stopped patrolling the Coiba National Park, illegal fishing (sport- and commercial fishing) inside the park sadly is getting to a serious problem again. Recently we discovered a big fishing net covering a major part of a dive site called “Bajo 20”. After reporting this to ANAM (the Panamanian Environmental Agency), who is in charge to manage, maintain and protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site, nothing has to be done to remove the net and minimize the damage.
