La Orca – the only real dive boat on Coiba – running again

La Orca, our customs built dive boat, featuring tank racks for 16 tanks, and seats for 10 divers – 5 on each side of the boat, is running again after an overhaul and fitting a completely rebuilt engine. This is just in time for the soon starting rainy season, as it is the only boat in Santa Catalina, outfitted with a cabin and a hardtop roof covering the whole length of the boat. Dive Boat Orca rebuilt by our own Team

After a busy first two weeks in May we took our flagship “Orca” out of the water to do “some” mainatainance work – so we thought. When we took a part of the floor off, we saw, that after working many hours in rough waters for 5 years, a lot of the structure has been damaged and broken and that there even has not been enough or strong enough structure for the conditions we encounter in our dive trips to […]

10 years of Scuba Coiba – 10 years of changes – continuing

When Scuba Coiba opened in 2003, it has been the first land based dive center offering access to Coiba National Park in Panama. Before, it was very difficult to dive here. It either was the expensive option, going on a live-a-board or the logistical nightmare, renting boats in Puerto Mutis and carrying all equipment and tanks with one on 3 to 4 hour trip one way. Another barrier was, that the prison in Coiba was still operating and the police […]

The HIGHLIGHTS have been: 4 whale shark encounters 3 giant manta rays Several goliath grouper sightings Hundreds of mobulas One bull shark Harlequin shrimps Sea horses And the usual white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, sting rays, turtles, moray eels, frog fish and schools […]

10 Years Scuba Coiba – 10 years of changes – continuing

When I came to Santa Catalina the first time in spring 2003, the bus stopped in front of the beach and local fishermen carried in the catch of the day. Being used to the catches seen in Bocas del Toro and other places, it was obvious, that the stories heard about the amount and sizes of fish around Coiba Island are the truth. While working as diving instructor in Bocas del Toro since 2000 I have met tourists, who told […]

10 Years Scuba Coiba – a review of 10 years of changes

In 2013 Scuba Coiba is celebrating its 10th birthday. It is the story of setting up a dive center as close as possible to Coiba National Park. When I arrived in June 2003 at Santa Catalina the first time, the road was paved only to the small village of Los Tigres, the last 18 kms to Sta. Catalina was on a muddy dirt road, the bus ride from Soná took 3 hours. The 2 daily buses have been pretty […]
