Dive Operators Scuba Coiba from Santa Catalina and Dive Base Coiba from Pixvae organized the removal and disposal of big fishing nets and long lines covering parts of several dive sites of Coiba National Park.
The project was funded by Rancho Estero cabins in Santa Catalina, voluntary work was given by the professional divers Ben Harris, Christophe Mangano, Kevan Mantell and Herbie Sunk. The official authority for the National Park ANAM was so genorous to exonorate us from paying park entry fees.
Since Mar Viva has stopped patrolling the waters of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Coiba National Park, little is done by the Panamanian authorities to enforce protection of the sanctuary and illegal fishing – sport fishing and commercial fishing – has become a serious problem again.
We will continue to report of illegal fishing practices in our blog and www.facebook.com/ScubaCoiba page and will try to set up some kind of funding to minimize damages of the marine habitat of Coiba National Park.
