Dive Operators Scuba Coiba from Santa Catalina and Dive Base Coiba from Pixvae organized the removal and disposal of big fishing nets and long lines covering parts of several dive sites of Coiba National Park. Since MarViva stopped patrolling the Coiba National Park, illegal fishing (sport- and commercial fishing) inside the park sadly is getting to a serious problem again. Recently we discovered a big fishing net covering a major part of a dive site called “Bajo 20”. After reporting this to ANAM (the Panamanian Environmental Agency), who is in charge to manage, maintain and protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site, nothing has to be done to remove the net and minimize the damage. The two last mooring systems have been installed yesterday (the 2nd of July) at the dive sites of Shark City and Frijoles Ridge. Mission complete! Within the next week we will re-install twenty mooring systems at the Las Perlas Archipelago at the Bay of Panama.
